New Drug Can Help Prevent Delhi Belly

"NEW ORLEANS (Reuters Health) - The antibiotic rifaximin can prevent diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli infection, investigators from the University of Texas-Houston School of Medicine reported at a large medical conference here this week.

Treatments for traveler's diarrhea have changed little over the last five decades, Dr. Herbert L. DuPont told conference attendees. Current drugs used to treat these infections have side effects, and preventive treatment has not been considered because of the danger of inducing antibiotic resistance.
