Sudan: Why the West Has Failed "THE government was urged last night to "speak out urgently" against the displacement and slaughter of a million people in Sudan, or risk failing catastrophically refugees caught in one of the worst humanitarian disasters of the 21st century. The international community has been slow to react to the genocide in western Sudan that every day forces thousands of disposed and traumatised farming families to abandon their lands and seek a safe haven in neighbouring Chad. Britain has contributed £17 million to fund humanitarian aid in Darfur, where Arab militiamen, allegedly sponsored by the Sudanese government, have ruthlessly slaughtered tribal African civilians.
