"Q: I'm planning to hike the Grand Canyon in June. Do I need a high-top hiking shoe? I have low-top shoes that are very comfortable and worn in, but I am reading that high-top shoes are recommended. What do you think? - Danielle, Peoria, Ill.

A: When you say "hike the Grand Canyon," do you mean just hike down from the rim a little, or all the way down, maybe spending a few days? Because obviously, they're different things.

Either way my thoughts are this: The Grand Canyon's trail network is pretty well developed, meaning that you're apt to spend most of your time on well-maintained, smooth (although hardly level) trails. Not a lot of boulder-hopping or off-trail stuff.
