Britain to celebrate World Curry Week from October 17-23

As World Curry Week starts today, Nathan Rous reveals why Brits have a long-standing love affair with the spicy cuisine.

A flick through the Yellow Pages under the Takeaway section traditionally throws up some cringe worthy puns. Oriental Express, The King and Thai and Frier Tuck are just some of the names that bring tears to the eyes. Yet the only food to physically kick-start the waterworks is the humble curry.

In recent years, Britain has become a nation of curryholics. There are now more than 8,000 curry restaurants in Britain, visited by two million people each week. Each year £2 billion is spent in Indian restaurants - about £70 per second - while Marks and Spencers sells 18 tonnes of chicken tikka masala weekly.
