November 14, 2004Town tries to sell tourist on swamp
WALTERBORO, S.C. - Come one, come all to the Great Swamp Sanctuary. At least that's what town leaders hope. Walterboro has about 5,600 people and two exits on Interstate 95, which provides thousands access to New York and Miami every day. The trick is to get some of those 40,000 people who pass by at 70 mph to stop, spend some time and maybe some money. The answer may lie in a black-water swamp once traveled by Colonial settlers on their way to Charleston or Savannah, Ga. Turning the 840 acres, which is mined for its timber and often used to dispose of trash, into a park that people will want to visit is a tall task. "I don't think it's exactly a 'Field of Dreams' if-you-build-it-they-will-come situation, but I think it's close to that," said City Manager Tuck McConnell. Continued here Comments
