February 18, 2005What? No planes?
A lack of aircraft spells uncertainty for Lao Airlines DON ROSS Ultimately, birds are to blame for Laos' short two-year experiment with an Airbus A320. That's how Lao Airlines executives describe the disappearance of the only wide-bodied jet to ever find its way into the country's timetable. It could be a decade before the small airline plucks up enough courage to risk a similar gamble. The twin-jet aircraft digested low-flying fowl during the approach to Hanoi's international airport late last year, writing off an engine and initiating a long painful session in the maintenance hanger that culminated in the airline executives waving goodbye to the leased aircraft for good.
