A BACKPACKER feared dead in the Asian tsunami ended two months of agony for his family with a call home.

It was the first Paul Foster's loved ones had heard of him since before Christmas.

Paul, then in Laos, said he was going to Thailand, where many died. With no further word, relatives thought the worst.
