Full Skunk Train trips finally back on track

It has gone through bankruptcy and ownership change, but after a two-year absence the popular Skunk Train will resume its excursions between Fort Bragg and Willits starting Memorial Day weekend.

Acquired by the Sierra Railroad in December 2003 after previous owners had filed for bankruptcy, the Skunk Train has been operating on a seasonal basis, carrying passengers into the redwoods from depots in Fort Bragg and Willits. But starting May 28 through October, four-hour trips will begin between those two Mendocino County towns.

The 40-mile journey runs between highways 1 and 101 and crosses 30 bridges and trestles, goes through two tunnels, passes redwood forests and includes a stop at Northspur, the midway point. Once in Fort Bragg or Willits, passengers disembark and spend the night at an inn or hotel before returning the next day.
